Work, tools, machinery, the process involved and the people who do it intrigue me. Agriculture and construction especially fascinate me.

Farmers, ranchers, engineers — most of them can’t slam-dunk or throw tight spirals — but they and the others whose labors we depend upon are underrated on the hero scale.

I’ve journeyed to parts of the world where food shelves are perpetually bare and even in the cities elevators seldom run to the top. There they don’t take food or functioning water systems for granted.

When tillage begins, other arts follow.
The farmers, therefore, are the founders of human civilization.
Daniel Webster (1782–1852)
